This desert ‘camel country’ town in the north of the state was funded in 1488 by Rao Bikaji,a descendant of the founder of Jodhpur, Jodhaji. Bikaji chose a barren wilderness called "Jangladesh" and transformed it to an impressive city, called Bikaner after the founder" name. It is well known as the land of the finest riding camels, in the world and thereps a superb large fort, a government camel-breeding farm just outside the town. |

Bhandeshwar Jain Temples :- These Jain
temples were built by two brothers and named after them-the Bhandeshwar
temple-rich in mirror work and the Sandeshwar temple-stylized enamel and
gold leaf wall paintings. The temples are dedicated to 23rd Jain
teerthankar, Parsvanathji. Camel Breeding Farms :- This is a centre for camel research and breeding, situated 8 kms. from Bikaner and this institute is only one of its kind in Asia. The farm extends over 2000 acres of semi arid land and is managed by the Central Government. Devi Kund :- This is the site of royal chhatris (cenotaphs) of the House of Bikaji Rathore, built in the memory of the Bika dynasty rulers. These offer splendid example of the Rajput architecture. Gajner Wild Life Sanctuary :- 32 kms. on the Jaisalmer road is located the Gajner wild life sanctuary surrounded by hillocks. Gajner Palace, a summer resort of kings built on the beautiful lake along the sanctuary has been converted into a hotel. Migratory birds like the Imperial Sand Grouse make the Gajner Lake their home during the winters. Junagarh Fort :- This 96 metre fort with two entrances was built in 15th century by one of the most able and trusted generals of Akbar, Raja Rai Singh. The Suraj Pol, or Sun Gate, is the main entrance to the fort. The distinctive feature of this fort and its palaces is the unparalleled quality of the stone carving. Kalibangan :- (205 km)The extensive remains of the pre-Harappan and Harappan civilizations, found at this place in the Hanumangarh district, are of immense interest. This place houses immense treasure of our past and is of particular interest to archaeology enthusiasts. Karni Mata Temple :- Deshnoke (30 km)This 600 year old temple is dedicated to Karni Mata, a famous mystic of her times, believed to be an incarnation of goddess Durga. Devotees feed the rats, owing to the belief that these rodents will be reincarnated as holy men. The entrance archway is intricately carved in marble. Kolayatji :- (50 km)An ancient place of pilgrimage, dedicated to Kapil Muni, a saint, who propounded the Sankhya philosophy. The temple here is the venue for a fair in the month of Kartik (Oct.- Nov.), attracting thousands of pilgrims. It is an idyllic picnic spot as well. Lalgadh Palace :- Designed by Sir Swinton Jacob for Maharaja Ganga Singh almost -90 years ago, this is an extraordinary monument, built in red sandstone. The magnificent fort is a fascinating juxtaposition of the Oriental style and European luxury. Shiv Bari Temple :- (6 km)It is 6 kms. from Bikaner and was built in the 19th century by Maharaja Doongar Singhji. Beautiful paintings and a Nandi Bull facing the Shiva Lingam are the attractions of the temple. The Ganga Golden Jubilee Museum :- This museum is said to be the best in Rajasthan and is now run by the Government of Rajasthan. It has a superb collection of terra-cotta ware, paintings, coins, sculptures and arms. Getting in, Around & Away AIR : The nearest airport is Jodhpur 253 kms.
