Thiruvananthapuram, meaning "The Town of Lord Anantha” or the abode of the sacred thousand-headed serpent is the capital city of Kerala State, built on seven hills. Formerly known as Trivandrum it is also the headquarters of Thiruvananthapuram district. This seaside city has its boundary with Thiruvananthapuram Rural District Police on all three sides and the Arabian Sea on the Western Side offering all modern facilities needed by a visitor. |

Aruvikkara :- Situated about 16 kms. from the
city is Aruvikkara both a pilgrim centre and a picnic spot, with a
waterfall nearby. The spot houses a temple, with a rock cut shrine
dedicated to Goddess Bhagvathy, the divine embodiment of female power. A
stream with fishes, coming up to be fed by visitors, is another
attraction. Kovalam :- Kovalam, the world-renowned beach endowed with a sheltered bay safe for swimming during the off-monsoon months is about 16 kms. away from the city. It is a unique and uncluttered beach of silvery sands fringed with rows of tall palms. Padmanabhaswamy Temple :- Located about 63 kms. away from the city Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple belongs to the royal family of the erstwhile Travancore princely state. The name also reflects the city's best-known temple and a famous landmark, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Ponmudi :- About 61 kms. away from the city is this beautiful hill station with natural scenery and salubrious climate. It is famous for its cool thick green atmosphere and the scope of hiking in high trails make the visit an exhilarating experience. Public Park :- The Public Park houses many important institutions, like the Zoo and the Botanical Gardens. The observatory on the Observatory hill is also located in the Public Park. Sankumukham Beach :- This is a city beach with a long stretch of clean sand near to the airport featuring an indoor recreation club, a roller skating rink, a children’s traffic training park, a starfish-shaped restaurant and an aquarium. The water here is suitable for bathing. Veli Tourist Village :- About 11 km from the city is this Tourist Village with a large recreational centre located near the airport along a sheltered lagoon. Kerala’s famous sculptor Kanai Kunhiraman has landscaped its gardens. A floating bridge connecting the village to the beach and floating restaurant are the main attractions. Getting in, Around & Away AIR : Thiruvananthapuram International Airport (6 kms. from the city) has air links with convenient connections to Maldives, Sri Lanka and many countries to the West of Arabian Sea and other important ports. Indian Airlines and Jet Airways operate domestic flights to different parts of the country. RAIL : Thiruvananthapuram is an important railway terminus on the southwestern coast with train services from all parts of the country, including the southernmost tip of the subcontinent, Kanyakumari (Cape Comorin).
