Seismology Can Enhance Mining, Tunneling, and Blasting – Dr. Vyas

Seismology is a branch of geoscience that deals with the study of earthquakes. It is a scientific and interdisciplinary field that explores earthquakes and related concepts. This was stated by Dr. Jagdish Chandra Vyas, Senior Scientist at the Institute of Mine Seismology, Australia, while speaking as the keynote speaker at the national seminar on "Advancements in Seismology: Fracture, Wave Field, and Physics-Based Exploration of Ground Motion" held at the Vice-Chancellor Secretariat Auditorium of Janardan Rai Nagar Rajasthan Vidyapeeth.

Dr. Vyas explained how the coordination of waves and forces can differentiate between earthquakes and nuclear training activities. He also elaborated on the use of the Doppler Effect and sonic booms in understanding seismic activities. Stressing the applications of seismology, he highlighted its utility in mining, tunnel construction, and blasting operations.

In his presidential address, the Vice-Chancellor of Janardan Rai Nagar Rajasthan Vidyapeeth, Colonel Prof. Shiv Singh Sarangdevot, remarked that approximately 20,000 earthquakes occur worldwide annually. He emphasized that earthquakes are among the most unpredictable natural disasters, causing massive destruction wherever they strike. He highlighted the importance of studying this phenomenon to understand its occurrence and mitigation measures. Prof. Sarangdevot elaborated that seismology, as an interdisciplinary field, encompasses a rich history with contributions from mathematicians, physicists, geologists, engineers, and inventors.

Earlier, the seminar commenced with a lamp-lighting ceremony and floral tributes to Goddess Saraswati by Vice-Chancellor Colonel Prof. S.S. Sarangdevot, Registrar Dr. Tarun Shrimali, and Dr. Manish Shrimali.

Dr. Sapna Shrimali, Director of the Faculty of Science, welcomed the guests and shared details of the event. The program was conducted by Dr. Siddhima Sharma, and the vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Mangal Shree Dulawat.

The seminar was attended by Dr. Uttam Sharma, Dr. Bhavesh Joshi, Dr. Deepti Soni, Dr. Yogita Shrimali, Dr. Pooja Joshi, Dr. Khushboo Jain, Ms. Shaktika Choudhary, Lalima Sharma, Himani Verma, Dr. Gaurav Garg, Dr. Pradeep Singh Shaktawat, Dr. Dilip Choudhary, and other faculty members and students.
