Limitless Opportunities for Athletes in India: Dilip Tirkey

Udaipur (Dr. Muneesh Arora) – Former captain of the Indian hockey team and known as the “Wall of Indian Hockey,” Dilip Tirkey, shared his thoughts in an interview after receiving an honorary D.Litt degree at SPS University. He expressed that there are immense opportunities for athletes in India today. Athletes can build their futures not only as players but also as coaches, physiotherapists, or in sports management roles.

Tirkey mentioned that the standard of Indian hockey has significantly risen. He noted the unfortunate circumstances at the Olympics, where the team missed winning gold and silver medals and had to play with only ten players. However, the Indian players performed their best, and Indian hockey is now close to reclaiming its lost glory. He emphasized that in India, there are limitless opportunities for athletes, who should focus on giving their best; opportunities will inevitably come their way at least once in their careers.

Tirkey also mentioned India’s preparations to host the 2036 Olympics, with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) expected soon. He believes that as India prepares for the Olympics, athletes will have more and more opportunities to advance. When asked about sports management courses in India, Tirkey acknowledged that such a course has not yet come to his attention, but he is aware that SPS University plans to offer one soon. This course, he believes, will provide more opportunities to athletes and fulfill the country's need for specialized training in sports management. He highlighted that proper sports management helps reduce pressure on athletes by providing them with the latest techniques and knowledge.

Regarding political pressure in sports, Tirkey advised athletes to focus solely on performing at their best, regardless of politics. He believes that if an athlete is excellent, nothing can hold them back. However, Tirkey expressed his disapproval of politics in sports, stating that it hinders the growth and spirit of athletes.
