Successful Cochlear Implant for a 3-Year-Old Child at Geetanjali Hospital, Udaipur

Recently, the ENT department of GMCH successfully performed a cochlear implant on a 3-year-6-month-old child born with hearing impairment.

Dr. Pritosh Sharma, the head of the department, shared that the child received a CI 632 cochlear implant, one of the world's latest advanced implants, and the first of its kind in southern Rajasthan. The successful operation was carried out by the ENT team, including Dr. Pritosh Sharma, Dr. Nitin Sharma, Dr. Anamika, Dr. Riddhi, and Dr. Vikram Rathore, along with anesthetists Dr. Alka and Dr. Karuna. Renowned surgeon Dr. Sumil Mrigh from Delhi was invited as a mentor for the surgery. Post-surgery, the child will undergo rehabilitation training to enable hearing and speech. **What is a Cochlear Implant?**

A cochlear implant surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision behind the ear to open the mastoid bone. The facial nerve is identified, and a pathway is created between them to access the cochlea. Implant electrodes are then fitted into the cochlea, and an electronic device called a receiver is placed under the skin behind the ear. The incision is then closed.
