Dr. Shamim Khan Successfully Treats Life-Threatening Acute Necrotizing Pancreatitis

Kota – Dr. Mohammad Shamim Khan, MD (Unani Medicine) and in-charge of the Government Unani Dispensary, North Kota, located at Masjid Gali, Bhimganj Mandi, Kota Junction, successfully treated a 44-year-old male patient from Padampura Kishanganj, Baran, who was suffering from acute necrotizing pancreatitis.

On April 28, 2024, the patient came for Unani medical consultation, presenting symptoms including fever, abdominal pain, swelling, bloating, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. The patient had a drainage tube inserted in the pancreas, draining 50-60 cc of foul-smelling pus daily, with deteriorating kidney function and rising serum creatinine levels. The infection was uncontrolled, with elevated TLC levels. The patient was on a liquid diet and extremely weak, with his weight dropping from 74 kg to 47 kg.

Initially admitted to MBS Hospital, Kota, on February 9 for acute pancreatitis, the patient was later transferred to a private hospital in Jaipur when his condition worsened, resulting in respiratory difficulties. Diagnosed with ascites and pleural effusion, he underwent treatment for 15 days, which resolved these conditions but not the pancreatitis or pus drainage. Despite receiving expensive antibiotics, his condition fluctuated.

Dr. Khan advised continuing allopathic treatment alongside Unani medicine. The prescribed Unani regimen included a mixture of herbs with immune-enhancing, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, wound-healing, blood-purifying, and hypoglycemic properties. The treatment comprised "Naqoo-e-Shahtara" 35 grams soaked in 100 ml of warm water overnight, strained, and consumed on an empty stomach twice daily, "Arq-e-Mako" 50 ml and "Arq Kasni" 50 ml on an empty stomach twice daily, and "Arq Badyan" 50 ml after meals twice daily.

After seven days, the patient experienced relief from fever, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. His abdominal swelling and bloating reduced, appetite improved, and pus drainage decreased to 20-25 cc per day with thinner consistency and less odor. Serum creatinine and TLC levels normalized. By May 30, he transitioned to a regular diet, regained physical strength, and was able to walk. The drainage tube was removed on June 30, and the Unani treatment continued until July 15. The patient's health has significantly improved, though he is still undergoing treatment for complications like high blood sugar.

Dr. Khan emphasized that while emergency and acute conditions should typically be treated with allopathic medicine, combined therapy under expert supervision can enhance the immune response and facilitate recovery in severe and complex cases. This approach also minimizes drug side effects on organs such as the liver and kidneys. Dr. Khan has successfully applied this method to various conditions, including stroke, paralysis, TB of the lungs, intestines, and brain, chronic kidney failure, chronic heart failure, and post-traumatic cervical myelopathy.
