Udaipur. The Department of Fashion Technology and Designing (DFTD) at Mohanlal Sukhadia University (MLSU) is making significant strides in promoting fashion as a tool for women's empowerment. On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the department reinforced the idea that fashion is not merely about aesthetics but a powerful medium for self-reliance, self-expression, and social transformation.
Fashion extends beyond clothing—it serves as an expression of individuality and a means for women to assert their identity. The Department of Fashion Technology and Designing at MLSU has been instrumental in providing a platform for students to explore traditional Indian fashion in contemporary forms. Under the expert guidance of faculty members, undergraduate and postgraduate students have been encouraged to innovate while staying rooted in the rich textile heritage of India.
With the evolving fashion industry, the department has been actively fostering entrepreneurial opportunities for women. Through start-up incubation programs, fashion exhibitions, and industry collaborations, female students and alumni are encouraged to launch their own labels, boutiques, and textile enterprises. The department also provides mentorship and exposure to both national and international markets, ensuring that women find financial independence and professional success through fashion.
One of the core missions of DFTD at MLSU is to safeguard and promote India’s rich heritage of handloom and handicrafts. Traditional crafts such as block printing, bandhani, tie & dye, and embroidery are integral to the curriculum, enabling students to work with artisans and develop innovative designs. By bridging the gap between rural artisans and modern markets, the department is playing a crucial role in uplifting women weavers and craftsmen.
In celebration of International Women’s Day, the department organized fashion shows, panel discussions, and interactive sessions with prominent women designers, weavers, and industry experts. These events provided students with valuable industry insights and real-life success stories, inspiring them to pursue careers in fashion and entrepreneurship.
Professor Sunita Mishra, Vice-Chancellor of MLSU, extended her blessings and best wishes on this occasion, highlighting the university’s commitment to women’s empowerment through fashion. She stated:
"Fashion is not just about garments—it is a statement of identity, confidence, and independence. At MLSU, we are dedicated to fostering creativity, innovation, and inclusivity in fashion education. By providing a dynamic learning environment, we empower women to become leaders, entrepreneurs, and changemakers in the fashion industry."
With this vision, the Department of Fashion Technology at MLSU continues to nurture future designers and entrepreneurs, ensuring that women not only redefine fashion trends but also contribute meaningfully to society and the economy. Because when women are empowered through fashion, they don’t just dress for success—they design it.
