Complex Surgery Performed on Newborn at PIMS Hospital, Udaipur

Udaipur: Doctors at Pacific Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Hospital, Umarada, have successfully completed a complex surgical procedure on a newborn baby, adding another achievement to their pediatric surgery department.

Dr. Atul Mishra, a pediatric surgeon at the hospital, reported that the baby girl, born to parents from Kurdiya, Udaipur, began experiencing severe abdominal bloating and vomiting within two to three days of birth. Diagnostic tests revealed a condition known as jejunal atresia, where a portion of the small intestine does not form correctly. The surgery, which lasted approximately three hours, involved removing the damaged portion of the intestine and rejoining the healthy parts.

Dr. Mishra explained that this condition occurs in about one in two to three thousand newborns, resulting in a complete blockage of the intestine. While the surgery is complex, successful treatment can lead to a complete recovery with no long-term complications.

Ashish Agarwal, Chairman of the Institute, noted that the treatment was provided completely free of charge under the Janani Suraksha Yojana. Alongside Dr. Mishra, the team included neonatal specialist Dr. Ankit, pediatricians Dr. Vivek Parashar and Dr. Rahul Khatri, anesthesiology specialists Mrs. Dr. Kamlesh Rathore, Dr. Ganesh, Dr. Hardika, resident doctors Dr. Lavi and Dr. Shreyash, and staff members Arun, Reshma, and Deepak, all of whom played crucial roles in the successful procedure. The baby is now fully recovered and in good health.
