Rare Successful Surgery to Remove Broncholith Using Bronchoscope at PIMS Hospital

Udaipur: Doctors at Pacific Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Hospital, Umarda, successfully performed a rare surgery to remove a broncholith using a bronchoscope. 

PIMS Chairman Ashish Agarwal informed that a 65-year-old male patient was admitted to the Respiratory Medicine department in the recent days. The patient had consolidation in the lower left lung, and his sputum was inconclusive. Therefore, the doctors decided to perform a bronchoscopy. During the procedure, while searching for the left main bronchus, a stone-like lesion was found in the mucosa of the bronchus, which was removed using biopsy forceps and extracted with a Dormia basket in an en-block fashion. This is a very rare case, and only a few such instances of broncholith removal using bronchoscopy have been reported worldwide, with two of those cases being at PIMS, Udaipur.
