PIMS Hospital Closes Heart Defect Without Surgery

Udaipur | Doctors at Pacific Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Hospital, Umarda, have achieved a remarkable feat by closing a heart defect without open-heart surgery, using advanced cardiology techniques. The hospital's chairman, Ashish Agarwal, reported that the medical team successfully closed a congenital heart defect in a child without any invasive procedure. The procedure was conducted under the Chiranjeevi Yojana, offering free treatment.

Senior Consultant and Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Mahesh Jain and his team performed an ASD (Atrial Septal Defect) device closure surgery to seal the heart hole. Ashish Agarwal explained that typically, the gap between the two chambers of the heart closes naturally within a few months after birth. However, in some cases, the hole remains open, a condition medically referred to as ASD.

Dr. Mahesh Jain stated that individuals with this condition often experience difficulty in activities such as walking, climbing stairs, shortness of breath, dizziness, and weakness, and their physical development is generally slower than that of healthy individuals. The ASD device closure technique involves a canopy-like device with two umbrellas and a tubular section, which is inserted into the heart through a catheter to seal the hole. Dr. Jain performed the surgery with assistance from Cardiothoracic Anesthetist Dr. Vipin Sisodia and CTVS Surgeon Dr. Vivek Rawat.
