Two Complex Surgeries Successfully Performed at PIMS Udaipur

Udaipur: Two complex and rare hepatobiliary surgeries were successfully performed within a week at Pacific Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Hospital, Umarda.

Pediatric surgeon Dr. Atul Mishra shared that two girls aged 7 and 8, from Sirohi and Dungarpur, were suffering from continuous abdominal pain. Upon investigation, they were diagnosed with Choledochal Cyst, a rare condition found in only one out of 1.5 lakh individuals. This congenital condition causes the bile duct connecting the liver to the intestine to swell like a balloon, blocking bile flow and potentially leading to jaundice, vomiting, pain, and even cancer if untreated.

Dr. Mishra explained that the surgery is highly complex, requiring the removal of the affected duct and reconstructing a new one by joining the liver and intestine at three different points. Each surgery lasted around five hours, and both girls are now fully recovered and have been discharged.

The surgeries were supported by Dr. Tyagi, Dr. Pinu, Dr. Anil, Dr. Ketki, Dr. Mahaveer, and staff members Arun, Harish, Ashok, Zeeshan, among others.

PIMS Chairman Ashish Agrawal stated that both surgeries were conducted completely free of cost. He added that in recent years, the Pediatric Surgery Department at PIMS has successfully handled several such complex procedures. The hospital and medical college are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities.
