Udaipur. Doctors at the Pacific Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Hospital, Umra, have successfully treated an older woman with a complicated lung disease.
Chairman Ashish Agarwal said that a 64-year-old woman had come to the Respiratory Medicine OPD at PIMS Hospital, Umrḍa, complaining of shortness of breath and cough with phlegm. Apart from this, the woman was feeling loss of appetite, weight loss and weakness. On enquiry, the patient was also found to have hypertension and diabetes in the past. The CT scan showed a massive nodule in the right lung. The bones had lytic and sclerotic lesions, suggesting cancer lung metastasis.
After this, samples were sent for various investigations by bronchoscopy to detect the disease. Microscopic features were consistent with pulmonary mycosis. BAL fluid culture was positive for Aspergillus fungus. As the CT scan suggested a massive lesion, a CT-guided biopsy was taken, suggesting adenocarcinoma of the lung mass. Bone biopsy was also performed, indicating small clusters of malignant cells between the bony trabeculae. The case was therefore diagnosed as adenocarcinoma of the lung with pulmonary mycosis with the underlying collapse of the right lung with gross right-sided pleural effusion, a rare condition as it is a combination of cancer and fungal disease. The patient was started on anti-fungal therapy and referred to the oncology department for further management of lung cancer. Treatment of the patient Dr Wahab Mirza, Head of the Department of Respiratory Diseases of PIMS, Dr Sanidhya Tank and his team members Dr T. Kushal Kumar, Dr Rishabh Agarwal, Dr Kumar Pranshu, Dr Gurmehar Singh Thethi, Dr Arpit Johar and Technician Giriraj did it.
Ashish Agarwal congratulated the medical team and said that now complex to complex and chronic respiratory diseases are being successfully treated at this institute.
