Udaipur, A successful surgery was performed at Pacific Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), Bhilo Ka Bedla, to correct the spinal deformity (scoliosis) of a 13-year-old child, giving him a new lease on life. The child, a resident of Jupna village in Pratapgarh, had been unable to stand straight for several years. Whenever he stood up, his body would lean to one side. According to his family, the child had exhibited this spinal curvature since he was about three or four years old. Despite consulting local doctors, they saw no improvement, prompting them to bring him to PMCH.
At PMCH, spine surgeon Dr. Subhash Sharma conducted examinations, including X-rays and MRIs, which revealed that the child was suffering from scoliosis, a condition causing abnormal curvature of the spine.
The surgery was performed by a team led by Dr. Subhash Sharma, Head of the Orthopedics Department and Spine Surgeon, along with Dr. Deepak Agrawal, Dr. Prakash Audichya, and Dr. K.G. Jagind from the Anesthesia Department. During the operation, the child’s spine, which had a 70-degree curvature, was corrected to a 12-degree curvature. The complex surgery took about five to six hours to complete, successfully straightening the spine.
**Congenital Condition Possible**
Dr. Subhash Sharma explained that scoliosis is a condition that causes abnormal curvature of the spine, affecting children more frequently. In some cases, the condition is congenital, meaning it is present at birth, while in others, it may become noticeable as the child grows older. This child's condition became evident around nine or ten years of age.
The surgery was performed free of cost with the support of the hospital's management and under the Chiranjeevi Health Scheme. The child is now fully recovered, and his family expressed their gratitude to PMCH's Chairperson, Rahul Agrawal, and Executive Director, Aman Agrawal, for their support. The family is overjoyed at the child's complete recovery.
