Consumer complacency promotes corruption in market – Dr Meenu Srivastava

The Resource Management and Consumer Science department of College of Community and Applied Sciences, MPUAT, organized a five-day training program on ‘Consumer Empowerment through Rights and Legal Protection’ under IDP-NAHEP. In the valedictory session of the training Dr Meenu Srivastava, Dean of College, emphasized that the complacent behavior of consumers encourages cheating and corruption in the market.
Dr Srivastava further explained that consumers need to unite and stand up for their rights to give proper direction to marketing forces that cheat them. In addition to Dr Srivastava, Mr Manish Bhatnagar, Enforcement Officer, Department of Food and Civil Supplies, Udaipur, discussed the role of consumer education in fighting cheating and protecting consumer rights. Mr Navtej Singh, Manager LPG Sales, Bharat Petroleum, Udaipur, talked to students about the safe handling of LPG.
Dr Suman Singh, Emeritus Professor CCAS, presented the five days training details. The training program included lectures and demonstrations by eminent speakers from Rajasthan on various topics of consumer concern. The sessions covered recent provisions in the Consumer Protection Act 2019, the redressal mechanism in three-tier consumer commissions, the role of BIS in standardization of products with especial emphasis on hallmarking on gold ornaments, penalties for misleading advertisements, verification of weights and measures, scams and frauds in e-commerce and digital marketing, food safety, and the role of FSSAI, menace of adulteration and law, and safe use of LPG. Dr. Singh informed the house that an important outcome of the training program is that 125 students opted to become Manak Mitra of BIS, and a Standard Club under BIS is also formed in the college for students.
 Dr Hemu Rathore, Organizing Secretary of the program, stated that, in addition to lectures by renowned speakers, a rally on consumer protection messages was organized in the nearby Dhikli village by students, and an exhibition by students was organized on the theme Empowering Consumers through Clean Energy Transitions.
The program was compered by Dr Anjali Juyal, and the vote of thanks was proposed by Dr Arpita Nagori. Dr. Jaymala Dave, and Ms. Bipasha Bhowmick contributed in the smooth conduct of the programme.
