World Arthritis Day@ Paras Health

Udaipur: On this World Arthritis Day, it has become crucial to raise awareness about arthritis. Arthritis is a common health issue affecting millions globally, including in India. This condition does not only affect the elderly; it can impact people of all ages, from children to seniors. There are over 100 different types of arthritis, with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis being the most prevalent. Both can lead to severe pain and disability.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 9.6% of men and 18% of women over the age of 60 worldwide suffer from osteoarthritis, while in India, this figure ranges from 22% to 39%. Osteoarthritis is a debilitating condition where the cartilage that supports the joints gradually deteriorates, leading to pain, swelling, and stiffness, often affecting the hips and knees. In contrast, rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system mistakenly attacks the joints, causing inflammation and pain, often affecting multiple joints simultaneously.

Dr. Mohit Goyal, Consultant Rheumatologist and Clinical Immunologist at Paras Health Udaipur, emphasizes the importance of timely intervention for managing this condition: "Arthritis can significantly impact daily life, but timely diagnosis and treatment can help control it. With the right approach, affected individuals can return to their normal activities. It is crucial to address symptoms early to prevent irreversible damage."

Dr. Ashish Singhal, Senior Consultant Orthopedic and Robotic Knee Replacement Surgeon at Paras Health Udaipur, highlights the significance of an active lifestyle: "Incorporating regular exercise, cycling, and weight management into your routine can significantly reduce the risk of arthritis. Additionally, adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D helps maintain bone and joint health, keeping you active and pain-free as you age."

Given the increasing concern of arthritis due to aging and sedentary lifestyles in India, it is vital to recognize symptoms early and seek appropriate medical care. Ignoring joint pain or stiffness can lead to long-term disability and decreased quality of life. On World Arthritis Day, healthcare professionals at Paras Health urge individuals to maintain an active lifestyle, eat a balanced diet, and consult a doctor at the first signs of discomfort to adopt a proactive approach to joint health. Early diagnosis and proper management can help reduce the impact of arthritis and enhance quality of life.
