**Q: Can you tell us about your character in *Mr. & Mrs. Mahi*? What preparation did it require?**
*Rajkummar Rao (smiling):* “My character, Mr. Mahi, is a former cricketer whose career didn’t go as planned, but he turns that failure into something meaningful by becoming a coach. He helps guide Mahima, played by Janhvi Kapoor, on her cricketing journey. He’s not just a coach but also a partner who’s faced his own battles with the sport. To prepare for the role, I had to truly immerse myself in cricket. I underwent intense training to grasp the techniques and the emotional depth of being an athlete. Spending time with professional cricketers helped me get into their mindset. But beyond the sport, it was about developing that dynamic relationship with Mahima’s character, which adds depth to the film.”
**Q: What attracted you to this role?**
*Rajkummar (thoughtfully):* “It’s the exploration of ambition and the complexity of relationships that really pulled me in. *Mr. & Mrs. Mahi* shows how love and support can push people to become better versions of themselves. I was also thrilled to work with Sharan again, a filmmaker who beautifully captures emotional nuances. I loved playing a character who not only supports a female athlete but is also grappling with his own dreams and weaknesses. It’s a very human story.”
**Q: How important is it for you to have a partner who understands and supports you, both on and off-screen?**
*Rajkummar (smiling):* “It’s incredibly important. In any relationship, whether in life or on-screen, mutual understanding, respect, and encouragement are essential. On set, that chemistry made things flow effortlessly. We would often motivate each other, which is important, especially in a film like this where the emotional depth is so significant.”
