### Sewage Line Bypass Completed, But Udaipur's Lakes Still Face Sewage Overflow*

Udaipur,  While the bypassing of sewage lines from Lake Pichola is complete, there is still a pressing need to stop sewage leakage into the lake. Preventing waste flow into the sewage lines from the lake and ensuring lakes are sewage-free is essential.

This concern was raised during a recent lake dialogue.

Lake expert Dr. Anil Mehta pointed out that sewage from manholes and chambers on streets and alleys near the lake often overflows into the lake. Additionally, hidden leaks from sewage lines seep underground and enter the lake. Dr. Mehta emphasized that lakes are sensitive ecosystems crucial for public health and tourism-driven livelihoods. Maintaining them sewage-free is imperative. He proposed creating designated zones with dedicated teams for continuous maintenance and monitoring of the sewage system.

Dr. Mehta criticized the lack of implementation of smart city IoT technologies and suggested the installation of sensor-based control systems to monitor flow, water levels, gas emissions, and leaks in real time.

Former Lake Development Authority member Tej Shankar Paliwal acknowledged the value of bypassing sewage lines but highlighted that manholes within the lake allow water to escape wastefully. He recommended grouting manholes at lake entry and exit points to prevent this.

Paliwal stressed that even a drop of sewage entering Pichola—a drinking water source—poses a severe health risk to residents.

Nand Kishore Sharma, Director of the Gandhi Manav Kalyan Samiti, noted that sewage system failures impact groundwater quality, further underscoring the need for urgent action.
