### Indian Economic Association (IEA): Fostering Economic Research and Policy Advocacy since 1917
The Indian Economic Association (IEA), a registered body of economics professionals in India, was established in 1917 due to the pioneering efforts of Professor C.J. Hamilton and Professor Herbert Stanley Jevons. Professor Hamilton was appointed as the Minto Professor of Political Economy at the University of Calcutta in 1909, and Professor Jevons became a Professor of Economics at Allahabad University in 1914. Both professors were tasked with organizing and advancing research in economic sciences, which was to be published by their respective universities. In 1916, Professor Hamilton founded the Bengal Economic Association and began publishing the Bengal Economic Journal, which provided insights and policy recommendations on India’s socio-economic conditions. Similarly, Professor Jevons established a journal in 1916 to publish the research findings of Allahabad University's economics department.
In 1917, Professor Hamilton organized a conference in Calcutta that gathered economists from across India, leading to discussions on creating a national body to promote economic sciences in India. Consequently, the IEA was formed, becoming one of India’s oldest associations in the social sciences.
Since 1918, the IEA has hosted annual conferences uninterruptedly, featuring sessions with keynote addresses, memorial lectures, and several technical sessions covering topics of current relevance to economists, academics, researchers, and policymakers. In addition to annual conferences, IEA conducts refresher courses, seminars/webinars, and teaching monologues, supported by the International Economic Association. In 1986, IEA hosted the World Economic Congress of the International Economic Association under the presidency of Professor Amartya Sen. Renowned economists, including Professor Sen, Dr. Manmohan Singh, Professor K.N. Raj, and Dr. V.M. Dandekar, have served as IEA’s past presidents, guiding its activities.
IEA’s prestigious Indian Economic Journal, launched in 1946, is now published by Sage Publishing. Additionally, IEA publishes an annual bulletin detailing its yearly activities.
IEA’s mission is to promote interest in economics through teaching, training, research, and consultancy, thereby contributing to the public interest by analyzing India’s economic conditions and dynamics, especially in the global context. As India pursues its goal of becoming a developed economy by 2047, the IEA’s role has grown in relevance, providing prudent analysis and policy recommendations necessary to guide the country through global economic uncertainties. To date, IEA has conducted 106 annual conferences, typically held from December 27-29 each year.
