Early Life and Inspiration
Born on June 22, 1933, into a distinguished family in Shahpura, Mohan Mandela was deeply influenced by his father, Shri Mangilal Ji, a polyglot, orator, and revolutionary thinker. Mangilal Ji’s martyrdom, following a month-long hunger strike against the princely state, left an indelible mark on young Mohan. This tragedy instilled in him a spirit of rebellion, resilience, and empathy for the common man.
Amidst poverty and hardships, Mohan Mandela began expressing his emotions through poetry during his childhood. His verses vividly encapsulated the joys, sorrows, and struggles of the ordinary folk.
Contributions to Rajasthani Literature
Mohan Mandela’s works in Rajasthani language are unparalleled. He employed untouched dialectal words in his poetry, bringing authenticity to his expression. His book “Baadyaan Ra Phoolda” received the Jawaharlal Nehru Children’s Literature Award from the Rajasthani Language, Literature, and Culture Academy, Bikaner, in 1992.
His celebrated compositions include “Baaj Rahi Mardang,” “Ghanti Baji Tanan Tan,” “Mhaaro Rajasthan,” “Naaran Soon Ladbo Soro Chhe,” and “Chaando Roop Ro Dalo.” These poems are not only literary treasures but also beloved by the masses.
Literary Legacy and Unpublished Works
Mandela wrote extensively in both Rajasthani and Hindi. His notable published works include “Shakti Bhakti Aur Qurbani,” “Baadyaan Ra Phoolda,” and “Minakhan Ri Banagi.” The latter delves into 150 human weaknesses, presented ingeniously through verses.
His unpublished manuscripts, such as “Dharti Ri Jhanki” and “Algoja Ri Olkhaan,” are noteworthy. The latter comprises 400 verses set to the tunes of folk instrument Algoza, offering a vivid portrayal of rural life.
Education and Social Service
A retired headmaster, Mandela contributed to school celebrations with inspiring literary works. His collection of poems, curated by DIET, proved instrumental in enhancing school education, serving as a source of motivation for both students and teachers.
Family and Tradition
His sons, Satyendra Kumar Mandela and Dr. Kailash Mandela, have also made significant strides in literature and education. Dr. Kailash Mandela was honored with a national award by the Central Sahitya Akademi for his Rajasthani translation of “Kural Kavya.”
Tributes and Recognition
Since his passing in 1996, an All-India Poetry Conference has been held annually in Shahpura to commemorate his legacy. Recently, the Rajasthan government instituted an award in his name, further cementing his contributions to literature and culture.
