Railway Workers Union Resolves: Fight for OPS

Elections for recognition of railway unions are scheduled for December 4, 5, and 6. The West Central Railway Workers Union (WCRMU), led by Zonal President C.M. Upadhyay, has vowed to continue its fight for the restoration of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS). Unlike unions supporting New Pension Scheme (NPS) or Unified Pension System (UPS), WCRMU firmly stands for OPS, emphasizing that neither NPS nor UPS serves the interests of railway employees.

Key Issues and Demands
WCRMU Division Secretary Abdul Khalique highlighted that OPS has been a longstanding demand, with the union actively opposing UPS since its introduction. The union also focuses on other pressing issues:

Hard Duty Risk Allowance: Demanded for employees in departments such as signaling, operations, electrical, and engineering, whose work involves high risks.

LDCE Open to All: Advocacy for inclusive Limited Departmental Competitive Examination opportunities.

8th Pay Commission: Immediate relief packages and swift implementation of recommendations.

Criticism of Rival Unions
WCRMU criticized rival unions for engaging in commercial ventures such as malls, banks, and gas agencies, claiming they divert focus from employee welfare. It questioned the legitimacy of these unions’ opposition to privatization when their activities align with commercial interests.

Continued Efforts for Employees’ Welfare
The union reiterated its commitment to filling vacant posts, reducing work hours, and ensuring a 4200-grade pay for track maintainers working in extreme conditions. WCRMU also plans to intensify its movement post-elections for OPS, LDCE reforms, and better pay grades.

Employee Sentiments
Railway employees overwhelmingly support unions fighting for OPS, expressing discontent with those that have previously supported NPS and now back UPS. The union’s resolve to safeguard employee interests through active advocacy remains steadfast.

Historical Advocacy for OPS
WCRMU underscored its participation in a significant government-opposition movement, where NFIR General Secretary led a protest on January 21, 2023, alongside 2.5 lakh central employees at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan, pressing for OPS restoration—a fight that continues.

The union’s focus on employee welfare and commitment to OPS is expected to gain strong support in the upcoming elections.
