Successful Surgery for Complex Inner Ear Cancer
Udaipur, January 7. Doctors from the Cancer Surgery Department at Pacific Medical College and Hospital have successfully performed a complex surgery on a 75-year-old woman suffering from cancer in the inner part of her ear, giving her a new lease on life. This successful operation was carried out by Cancer Surgeon Dr. Saurabh Sharma, ENT Surgeon Dr. S.S. Kaushik, Anesthesia Specialists Dr. Prakash Audichya and Dr. Ravindra, along with Pathology Specialists Dr. Kavita and Dr. Bhavna, and their team.
The elderly woman, a resident of Lakhawali, had been suffering from ear pain for the past year. Upon consulting a local hospital, she was diagnosed with cancer. Her family brought her to Pacific Hospital, where Cancer Surgeon Dr. Saurabh Sharma confirmed cancer in the eardrum and inner ear, which could be treated through surgery.
Dr. Saurabh Sharma explained that the surgery, performed in collaboration with ENT Surgeon Dr. S.S. Kaushik, involved carefully removing the tumor using a microscope while preserving the pinna and reconstructing the outer ear. He further stated that the cancer had spread to the bones, and it was treated through lateral radical temporal bone resection surgery.
Dr. Sharma highlighted that inner ear cancer is an extremely rare disease, accounting for only 0.2% of all head and neck cancer cases. Such complex surgeries are available at only a few specialized centers in the country. This particular surgery required extensive expertise in skull base surgery to remove the tumor while preserving the nerves passing through the ear and the protective layers of the brain, which posed significant challenges.
The patient was treated free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat scheme as part of the hospital's social responsibility. The family expressed gratitude to PMCH Chairman Rahul Agarwal and Executive Director Aman Agarwal for facilitating the treatment. The patient has now fully recovered and has been discharged from the hospital.
