Discovery of Water Stream During Tube Well Digging in Mohangarh, Jaisalmer

A significant discovery of a water stream during tube well digging in Mohangarh, Jaisalmer, has led to three scientific possibilities being explored by experts:

Connection to the Tethys Sea:
The findings suggest that this region might have been part of the ancient Tethys Sea. If the soil extracted during the digging is red, sedimentary, and clay-like, dating back 30 to 60 million years (Tertiary period), and the water contains over 77% sodium chloride (27 grams per 1000 grams of water), it strongly indicates the presence of remnants from the Tethys Sea.

Remnants of the Ancient Saraswati River:
The water reservoir could also be a preserved remnant of the ancient Saraswati River, which once flowed through this region. This theory is supported by recent evidence suggesting the revival of the Saraswati River due to increased groundwater recharge in Punjab's plains over the last century.

Aquiferous Water Reserve:
The third possibility points to a vast underground aquifer. The Jaisalmer region, particularly in areas like Lathi-Chandan, is known for abundant water reserves in sandstone and limestone deposits. The water stream in Mohangarh ceased after approximately 50 hours, suggesting the aquifer may be receiving limited inflow from other sources. If replenished naturally, the aquifer could sustain underground water flow.

Naming the Discovery

Experts propose naming this aquifer the "Vikram Aquiferous" to distinguish it scientifically.

Expert Opinions

According to Professor Narpat Singh Rathore, former Head of the Geography Department at Mohanlal Sukhadia University, Udaipur, the discovery holds significant geological importance. He stated that such findings reinforce the region's rich history of natural water reservoirs and call for further exploration to understand their potential.

This discovery underscores the geological and historical richness of the Mohangarh region, opening doors for further scientific research and sustainable utilization of the water resources.
