Sewage in Lakes: A Crisis Ignored Despite Awareness

Udaipur,  Despite the Smart City initiative's promises to keep lakes sewage-free, sewage continues to flow into Udaipur's lakes, posing severe public health risks.

During a lake inspection on Sunday, activists discovered significant sewage discharge near the Ambamata Community Hall.

Dr. Anil Mehta, a lake expert from the Lake Conservation Committee, emphasized that ensuring safe sanitation and clean drinking water are primary responsibilities for a Smart City. However, he lamented that these critical needs remain unmet.

Former Lake Development Authority member Tej Shankar Paliwal pointed out that this problem has persisted for months, with no action taken despite repeated complaints to officials.

Nand Kishore Sharma, Director of the Gandhi Human Welfare Committee, warned that sewage inflow threatens the lake ecosystem, with plastics and waste degrading drinking water quality.

Environmentalist Kushal Rawal noted that sewage overflow is also contaminating groundwater, causing nearby wells and tube wells to become polluted.

Senior citizens Drupad Singh and Pallab Dutta urged the Lake Development Authority and the District Collector to establish a special task force for regular inspection and maintenance of the sewage system.
